Right buyer. Right time. Right message
Research is not trivia collection. 3x3 gives reps a fast, structured pass that confirms fit, finds a credible why-now, and turns what they learn into the message, before the prospect ever enters a sequence.

What this guide covers
- Qualification = right buyer. Trigger = right time. Tie-In = right messaging.
- Research exists to form a hypothesis, not to build a dossier.
- The operating play: Start in CRM → Get Social → Perform 3x3 → Record.
- Research is captured before prospects enter sequences so context survives execution and handoff.
- The manager's question is whether research is improving relevance, not how long it takes.
Research is not trivia collection
Somewhere along the way, 'research the prospect' became 'find a fun fact.' Reps surfaced college mascots and podcast appearances while missing the one thing that mattered: whether this account, right now, has a reason to care.
Research has one job: to produce a credible hypothesis about fit, timing and message. Anything that doesn't feed one of those three is decoration, and decoration is what turns a five-minute pass into a forty-minute one.
Qualification = right buyer. Trigger = right time. Tie-In = right messaging.
Qualification: is this actually the right account and person?
Before any messaging work, confirm the account belongs in the motion at all. Does the company sit inside the ICP lane, size, stage, motion, market? And does this person own the problem you're raising, or merely work near it?
This is the cheapest filter in outbound and the most often skipped. Every downstream asset: the sequence, the cadence, the call block, assumes this answer was yes.
Trigger: what changed, or creates a credible why-now?
A trigger is an event or condition that makes now a rational time for this conversation: planning cycles, budget events, hiring patterns, leadership changes, technology shifts, contract windows.
No trigger doesn't mean no outreach. It means you lead with situation rather than timing. But when a real trigger exists, it should shape the first line, because it's the most honest reason you have for showing up this week instead of last quarter.
Tie-In: how does the context shape the message?
The Tie-In is where research becomes outreach. You take what Qualification and Trigger surfaced and connect it to the problem hypothesis, in the buyer's language, about their world.
This is the output the rest of the system consumes: the Hook and Empathy lines in a HERO email, the reason-for-the-call on the phone, the why-now in a sequence's first touch.
Start in CRM → Get Social → Perform 3x3 → Record
A fast, repeatable pass: historical time guidance exists in the training material, but treat it as training context, not a universal benchmark. The structure matters more than the stopwatch.
- Start in CRM: what do we already know? Prior touches, account history, open opportunities, colleagues' notes.
- Get Social: the person's posts, comments and company activity. What are they publicly paying attention to?
- Perform 3x3: confirm Qualification, find the Trigger, draft the Tie-In.
- Record: write it into the CRM before outreach begins, in fields someone else could read.
Research is captured before prospects enter sequences
The ordering is the point. Research done after a prospect is already in a sequence is research that never reaches the message. It lives in a rep's head and dies when the rep moves on.
Captured first, the same context survives the whole chain: the sequence step, the call, the handoff to an AE, and the next rep who touches the account in six months. This is how research becomes an organizational asset instead of a personal habit.
ICP fit note, the trigger and its source, the problem hypothesis, the tie-in angle used, and anything the buyer said that changes the picture. Five fields beat fifty unstructured notes.
How 3x3 feeds everything downstream
- HERO: the Hook and Empathy blocks are Tie-Ins wearing an email format.
- Urgency: the Trigger pass is the why-now investigation, done upstream instead of improvised.
- Momentum Sequence: the first touch starts with research; 3x3 is that research, structured.
- Qualification & Handoff: the qualification half of 3x3 is the first layer of what makes a meeting count as pipeline.
Is research improving relevance, or consuming time?
The inspection question is not how long reps research. It's whether the research shows up in the message. Pull three sent emails and ask: can you see the trigger in the first line? Is the tie-in specific to this account's situation? If yes, the research is working regardless of minutes spent. If no, more research time will only produce better-hidden generic messaging.
What this looks like in live engagements
- FusionAuth: signal and context captured in the CRM before outreach, feeding messaging angles and call execution as part of a live system install.
- Kustomer: research, prioritization and relevance taught as reinforced team skills inside a documented capability build.
- Queryon: ICP and signal work anchored the messaging reset; the honest middle on outcomes is documented in the report.
Where 3x3 sits
Aim decides who deserves attention. 3x3 is how a rep confirms the aim was right, finds the timing, and walks into the first touch with something worth saying. It's the smallest discipline in the system with the widest blast radius.
